At Xavier University, we are unwavering in our dedication to upholding the highest academic standards in medical education, and our commitment to excellence is continually validated by many international accrediting bodies. These vital recognitions enable our graduates to secure exceptional residencies and become licensed physicians throughout the U.S. and Canada. That journey — your journey — begins here.
In 2015 Xavier received accreditation from the Accreditation Commission of Colleges of Medicine (ACCM). This is an independent, not for profit, accrediting organization based in the Republic of Ireland. The United States Department of Education has stated that the standards used by ACCM are comparable to those used to accredit medical schools in the United States. Like the CAAM-HP, ACCM uses the guidelines set forth by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
ACCM has gained World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) Recognition Status until December 31st, 2026. This means it meets the Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)’s requirements for an internationally recognized medical accrediting agency.
Xavier has obtained full accreditation until December 31, 2028.
On July 17th, 2020, the New York Board of Regents voted to approve Xavier University School of Medicine Aruba to place students in long-term clinical clerkship in New York State for 7 years. This is the longest term of approval that can be given to an International Medical School.
New York State Education Department approval allows:
- Xavier graduates to enter residency training in New York
- Xavier students to complete all their weeks of clinical training in affiliated New York teaching hospitals
California governor Jerry Brown signed California SB-798 into law on October 13th, 2017. This legislation repeals the law mandating the MBC’s independent evaluation process for the state of California effective January 1, 2020, provided schools meet other extant accreditation and quality standards, specifically stating the 2023 ECFMG mandate as the key qualifying criteria:
- “The foreign medical school has been evaluated by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or one of the ECFMG-authorized foreign medical school accreditation agencies and deemed to meet the minimum requirements substantially equivalent to the requirements of medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools, or the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation.”
- “The foreign medical school is listed on the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) World Directory of Medical Schools joint directory or the World Directory of Medical Schools.”
XUSOM, Aruba is accreditated by ACCM, which in turn is recognized by the ECFMG and WFME. This law permits Xavier students to apply for residency and licensure in the state of California.
The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) strives to achieve the highest level of medical care for Canadians through excellence in evaluation of physicians. It assesses over 11,000 medical students and graduates every year through its examinations. Its exams are offered in both official languages in sites across Canada, and in the case of the MCCEE, in over 500 locations in 80 countries. The MCC is also a leader in verifying and storing physician credentials, which the candidate can share with medical organizations across Canada.
Xavier’s listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools is internationally recognized by the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) for certification and eligibility for medical licensure.
Graduates are eligible to participate in the National Resident Matching Program and Canadian Resident Matching Service
The Medical Council of India (MCI) was established in 1934 to create uniform standards of higher qualifications in medicine and recognized medical qualifications both in India and abroad. Based upon the information received by the Indian Embassy/High Commission of India, Xavier has been approved of by the MCI.
Xavier is recognized by the Jordan Ministry of Health. This means our graduates can practice in Jordan.
ECFMG is a world leader in promoting quality health care—serving physicians, members of the medical education and regulatory communities, health care consumers, and those researching issues in medical education and health workforce planning. Xavier is compliant with the ECFMG 2023 rule that all international medical graduates must graduate from an accredited medical school in order to obtain residencies.

The World Directory of Medical Schools was established in 2013 through a joint effort by the International Medical Education Directory and the Avicenna Directory. It is a comprehensive list of all medical schools in the world. This allows students, faculty, medical regulatory agencies, and others, to easily determine the quality of a program. While not an accrediting body, attending a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools is a requirement for eligibility for the USMLE.
The government of Aruba granted Xavier University School of Medicine a charter in 2004. This allowed Xavier to create a medical school and grant qualified students Doctor of Medicine degrees upon completion of the program. The charter also permits the importation of human cadavers for use in anatomy studies and dissections.
As part of commitment to the highest standards of quality, XUSOM will engage in a process of continuous quality improvement (CQI) to ensure that the medical education program activities and the administrative activities align with the XUSOM’s mission, vision, goals and Strategic Plan, and to ensure compliance with accreditation standards.
